In This Program

This self-paced, asynchronous certificate program focuses on cultivating an understanding and development of interrelated skills that are fundamental to non-profit management. Through the 10 program modules, you will develop knowledge of and practices for: theoretical and practical applications of organizational and planning theories and models; inter-organizational relationships and functions of public, private and non-profit organization and human resources. Special emphasis is given to organizational vision, multitasking, and innovation in a dynamic environment.

Course Outline

There are a total of 10 modules, all of which are completely online and self-paced. Each module is comprised of video clips of nonprofit professionals, chapter readings and reflection exercises, short assignments and discussion forums for experiential learning, and a collection of resources to further your learning. This course uses the Learning Management System (LMS) Canvas. Participants will access all course materials through Canvas and complete any activities through Canvas. There will be a one-time 30-day extension available for purchase. Please contact the program manager for further information. 

Learner Outcomes

  1. Apply a basic understanding of the nature and character of non-profit organizations to your organizational context

  2. Apply critical skills of analysis regarding organizational problems, planning, program development, and implementation

  3. Explain and employ the various approaches to non-profit organizations, both organizationally and managerially by identifying basic management functions of planning, organizing, staffing, directing, controlling and representing

  4. Develop and implement strategies for concepts of organizational power, decision-making, motivation, and leadership

  5. Assess your interpersonal relationships and leadership practice skills

  6. Analyze the role of supervision, staff development, and training within the context of non-profit values and ethics

  7. Recognize the relevance of cultural humility and ethical practice

  8. Identify the significance of resource development, marketing and communications to a healthy organization

  9. Recognize the critical nature of fiscal management and accountability

  10. Describe the necessity of advocacy and public policy on the non-profit organizational environment

Certificate Requirements

  1. Successfully complete all 10 modules with assignments receiving a minimum grade of 80% or higher to pass.
  2. Complete the evaluation at the end of each module.

Social Work Continuing Education

The complete certificate program has been approved for 20 continuing education hours, by Temple University Harrisburg. Temple University Harrisburg is a pre-approved provider of continuing education by the PA State Board of Social Workers, Marriage and Family Therapists and Professional Counselors.  These credit hours satisfy requirements for LSW/LCSW/LMFT/LPC biennial license renewal. 

Certificates of attendance documenting continuing education hours or units will be issued by Temple University Harrisburg.

Technology Requirements

This is a self-paced course. Participants are expected to possess a basic level of technical competency and comfort level to be successful in the program. A computer with an Internet connection to access material through our learning management system (LMS) is required. You must also have the ability to respond to TUH staff and faculty using our learning management system, called Canvas. All students that are enrolled in our courses must understand basic computing skills sufficient to complete course work. These skills include word processing, copying and pasting, spell-checking, saving files, word count, attaching files to email, searching topics online, and using your computer’s browser. Instructors do not provide computer support or training.
