The Outdoor Wellness and Leadership Certificate allows students to take advantage of the outdoor and experiential learning opportunities available at Temple and hone their skills as decision-makers in a variety of settings.
This certificate is open to students from any major. Its objective is to promote social stewardship and teambuilding through the practical applications of leadership theory, risk management and problem solving. This interdisciplinary certificate will spread across topics from horticulture and sustainability to diversity and cultural intelligence, making use of hands-on and applied learning methods in several learning environments.

Increase your marketability as a professional after graduation. According to the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, Pennsylvania has the sixth-largest outdoor recreation economy in the nation, accounting for billions of dollars in economic impact each year. Obtaining a credential in this growing industry will set you apart from others looking for work today.
Beyond careers related to the outdoor industry, employers seek employees with proficiencies in conflict resolution, problem-solving, communication, and cultural competence. These skills are developed throughout the program, as you are provided with increased leadership responsibility in our dynamic, experiential learning environments.
Obtaining the OWL Certificate requires a minimum of five (5) courses and a minimum of ten (10) credit hours.
The courses will be selected as follows:
- One course (2-3 credits) from the Leadership Theory category;
- One course (2-3 credits) from the Risk Management and Ethics category;
- Two courses (3-6 credits) in Applied/Experiential coursework;
The final course taken will be the Outdoor Wellness and Leadership capstone (UC 3187). Courses in the categories above must be successfully completed prior to taking UC 3187.
General Education courses (courses numbered 08xx and 09xx) may be included in the array of elective courses but can constitute no more than one of the five courses toward the certificate.
At least three courses required for the certificate must be completed at Temple.
