BGS: Michael’s Story

A man on a stage receiving his diploma, with another robed person behind him.

Michael’s journey started at an all-boys academic high school near Broad Street and Olney Avenue. Some 50 years later, he completed his degree at Temple University in North Philadelphia, bringing him full circle. Working for the City of Philadelphia for over two decades in the court system, he watched judges, attorneys and police officers making positive impacts on their communities and was inspired to do the same. After Michael retired, he decided to return to college and realized the Bachelor of General Studies degree was his best option for crossing the finish line.

Deep in my heart I knew I would only be satisfied if I achieved this goal—I had reached an accumulation of skills and a mindset that put me in a perfect position to complete this process at this time. I laugh about it with my friends now, because everyone in my life was encouraging and telling me I’ve always had it in me, but then there was still this doubt that would come over me at times. With (the BGS program) I could see light at the end of tunnel, and it kept getting brighter and kept getting closer each day.
